A Pip and Myrrh Adventure: Newport, RI

A co-worker, friend and sister in Christ had the idea last summer to run in Newport together.  It never happened.  Our schedules and the weather just never seemed to mesh.  This season we planned our day to Newport and then hoped for beautiful weather.  As the day approached the weather reports were not cooperating and we left it in the hands of our Creator.  And our prayers were answered!  Today Pip and Myrrh (that’s me) had our first adventure.

Yes, that is rain on my windshield.  By the time I reached our meeting point thankfully the rain had stopped.  We had very humid air, but the breeze from the ocean seemed to help.

Pip has more intel on Newport, so she planned our route. We meandered around town with a few glimpses of the water allowing us to see parts of Newport that we normally would not get to see.  Doesn’t the route look like a dog?

How cute are these little cars!  The Scoot Coupe is an interesting and fun way to see Newport if you aren’t running the town of course.

Did I mention how humid it was?  Well, I forgot about wiping the lens clean so I ended up getting a very cool heavenly effect to these photos.  I like them.

Trinity Church on Queen Anne Square – constructed 1725.  Just one of the many beautiful and historic buildings and houses we saw along our route.

Easton’s Beach was our stopping point which is the same start and finish of the Amica Newport Marathon.

After our 7 miles we decided on breakfast and boy were we famished!

Jonathan’s Café offers a small sit down hot meal service dining area or a to-go coffee and bagel, pastry option.  I decided to eat on the wild side today forgoing my typical gluten free fare and went for the Curious George French toast.  The toast was stuffed with fried bananas.  It was a decadent splurge.  Pip opted for a more healthy breakfast of egg white and spinach omelet with a side of plain French toast, however we each enjoyed a iced chai latte with soy milk.

So running does not always have to be locked in to your normal routes or training miles, you can take your running on the road.  Visit local cities and towns, map a route and enjoy exploring its offerings on foot.  Even though I’ve been to Newport many times, seeing it today via our 7 mile run was one of the memorable visits I’ve experienced.

Stay tuned for more adventures of Pip and Myrrh.
